Baton Rouge Startup: LocalMed To Create 52 New Jobs

Louisiana’s Economic Development Secretary, Stephen Moret and startup LocalMed CEO Keith English, announced last week that his company would be creating 52 new direct jobs in Baton Rouge. The new jobs will support LocalMed’s continued growth in their online and mobile technology platform that allows doctors, dentists and patients to handle appointment scheduling, management and reminders 24 hours a day.

The average salary of the new jobs will be $52,000 dollars a year and they will also include benefits. The Louisiana Economic Development Commission estimates that another 53 new indirect jobs will result as well bringing the grand total to over 100.

LocalMed was created by twin brothers Daniel and Derek Gilbert after Daniel had to deal with more than 8 doctor’s appointments per week while battling cancer. Once the cancer went into remission the brothers teamed up to create this new platform for better self management of appointments. They launched LocalMed in 2011.

LocalMed began attracting investors including English who joined as CEO in May. LocalMed’s platform will also be added to over 2000 Stay Healthy Kiosks nationwide in stores like Kroger. The kiosks will provide patients without their own access to mobile devices and the internet to make and keep up with appointments. The company plans to announce even more strategic partnerships in early 2013 as well as introducing Android and iOS apps.

Gov. Bobby Jindal said, “LocalMed is a homegrown, ‘made-in-Louisiana’ story that makes us proud. LocalMed is an extremely attractive, high-tech venture that could have chosen other states to build its headquarters – the company even looked at establishing its offices in Texas or Florida before choosing Louisiana. The company’s decision to come to Baton Rouge is the latest example that our state is becoming a beacon for the digital media and technology industries. We have a proud heritage of supporting jobs in the oil and gas industry or the chemical industry, but now we are diversifying our economy, and cities like Baton Rouge are becoming the next Austin and the next Silicon Valley where entrepreneurs and risk-takers are coming to change the face of technology and create good-paying jobs for our people.”

MassChallenge Startups Have Created Thousands Of Jobs

Most people feel that the most important factor of the innovation and startup buzz is job creation. Startup America is one of the biggest proponents of startups leading to job creation. Most startup incubators and accelerators across the country pride themselves on preparing startups for job creation. One of the nation’s largest startup accelerators, MassChallenge, has been doing just that, creating jobs.

In a report with an accompanying infographic by Analogue Studio, MassChallenge has released their job creation figures over the last three years. The number is incredible.

According to their data, MassChallenge has created 2,912 new jobs. As MassChallenge reports, and we agree, these are “high impact” jobs. We’re not talking about the kind of jobs your neighborhood franchise entrepreneur is creating. MassChallenge startups are creating programming jobs, marketing jobs, business development jobs and more.

To date the 2010 MassChallenge class has created 1,060 new jobs. The 2011 class has created 1148 jobs and the 2012 class is well on their way having already created 704 jobs and the class hasn’t even been over for a month.

Grow Utah Changes To Grow America Wants To Create 5M US Jobs Through Startups

Utah entrepreneur Alan E. Hall is a very successful business man. He is the founder and chairman of MarketStar and many other Utah based businesses. Hall is also rather philanthropic but rather than taking the easy route to philanthropy and contributing to the same few causes every year, he prides himself on teaching people to fish.

You know the old saying “Give a man a fish and you feed him for the day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life”. For the past six years through one way or another Hall has been teaching people to fish by investing in startups and entrepreneurs with a goal to create jobs. How many jobs? He hopes that through his newest effort Grow Utah,now known as Grow America, to add 5 million us jobs.

Thestandard.net says that Hall’s idea to start helping people came years ago when an acquaintance of his lost his job. That guy ended up working 3 part time jobs, accounting, working at a convenience store and delivering newspapers. Hall had one of his company supervisors hire that man and Hall personally funded the man’s salary until he was properly trained.

“And it dawned on me how many other people are unemployed or underemployed,” Hall says. “As a private citizen, I can give of my own wealth to inspire entrepreneurs to get up and running with their ideas, and jobs will be created. They will hire people.”

Grow America started out last year as Grow Utah. Hall kicked in $250,000 worth of awards and services that was divided between 9 startups. Grow America is working on one more session strictly based in Utah and then Hall plans to take the Grow America concept nationwide in April.

“The goal is to do everything we can, not just in Utah but around the country. In January, the prizes will be worth half a million dollars in cash and services.

Hall plans to grow and create 5 million US jobs within the next five years. For the nationwide rollout Grow America has enlisted corporate sponsors, Zion’s Bank, Comcast, Kunzler Law Group and the Utah Jazz.
