It took over 50 games for Finnish game development studio Rovio Mobile to come up with the smash hit Angry Birds. Angry Birds has grown to over 1 billion downloads and a merchandising arm worth hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars.

Rovio Mobile has done two spin off games of their franchise Angry Birds, Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Space. The latter becoming the fastest growing mobile game in history after being released in March and shown off at SXSW.

The company announced their 2011 earnings results on Monday. In that call they revealed that Angry Birds had generated $106 million dollars in revenue in 2011.  “The strong growth in revenue clearly demonstrates the popularity of the Angry Birds brand.” CEO Mikael Hed said.  He continued;  “The heavy investments made in 2011 to all business areas will be seen in future products. To ensure continuous success we need to be creative and stay focused on entertaining our millions of fans by continuously developing new and innovative products and services.”

Walmart has signed up to help promote Rovio Mobile’s next big mega hit Angry Birds Space. The game goes live in app markets across the world tomorrow, and if there was a store to line up to buy the app the tent lines would be around buildings by now.

The newest installment of Angry Birds is very well developed and takes on it’s physics nature that the game is grounded on. To come up with physics principals pertaining to space and weightlessness Rovio consulted real astronauts from Russia and NASA.

    You know every year during March Madness, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, analysts come out with the numbers of how distraction from the tournament and office pools, racks up costs for employers?

Well Angry Birds is no different. According to Alexis Madrigal of the Atlantic, the game Angry Birds is costing employers over $1.5 billion dollars in lost wages. Madrigal contends that these numbers, while they could be a smigeon off, show the cost of lost productivity due to Angry Birds.  It’s also important to point out that Rovio Mobile (Angry Birds developer) has a valuation of 1.2 billion. Wow!
