More and more we see companies/sites instead of creating new products, ideas just “steal” or borrow them from others. Facebook was a knockoff of MySpace and Friendster. Apple iPhone was a knockoff of the LG Prada. Samsung Galaxy devices are like the iPhone. With Facebook about to announce that you can now post status up to 5000 characters since they saw how much greater it worked on Google+ they choice to use the idea. Facebook had the like button so Google said you may like something but we’ll +1 it.
This isn’t just about “using” other peoples ideas as your own, this is also about the lack of building something new and instead buying others out. Google wanted to get into phones so it bought Android to compete with Apple. Google Videos wasn’t going anywhere and bought YouTube, same with Google Earth, Pool Party, Slide, Wave, Picasa, and so on. While they didn’t create email, they sure as hell revolutioned how it was used with GMail. Thus innovation happened, wasn’t something that had to be one of a kind, but a new way in doing something.
Google is on that way with being innovative with Google+ to a point. While Facebook had that group function, Google took it further than anyone believe and has a hit with Circles. Twitter innovated real time news in making it that any story no matter what it is, Pakistan where the guy was Tweeting about the raid as it was happening and didn’t even know it_ they where the first to have suggested users to follow, quickly followed Facebook and now sadly Google+. Apple wants to claim it created the tablet and wants to block everyone from using it from now on. Sorry, they’ve been in the medical profession years before the iPad.
We talk about innovative when it comes to phones, tech. But they really are not. *Rarely* does something come out that’s innovative and that’s a shame. Steve Jobs was one of the greatest innovators of my generation if not the most. Even though you look back and things he did was “borrow” ideas from others, claim it was him, and said Look, Innovation for all LIES But he did enhance and innovate a dying art form. Will we ever see true innovation or creatism ever again, no one knows. But what we are living in now is a world of copy, paste, 7zip, release… No innovation, no reality. This is the smartest time in not just America but the world, so why is it we can’t come up with new things to make us go wow.
Great read, so very true
You do have some valid points, but at our current stage in human technological growth, we’re not in an innovation stage. The 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s were the innovation stage, giving rise to a host of new technologies. Now, we’re in a refinement phase. We’re taking all those new inventions and improving on them. Don’t get down about it. Innovation will spark again as we move forward. Especially if we get a President in the next 20 years that’s interested in space. That’s what I hold out hope for.
