Amazon Now Accepting CD Trade-ins

Amazon has been recycling electronics and giving customers Amazon gift cards for a while now. They recently announced they are going to start taking CDs on trade in. While this news is met with excitement for many, those who use small local CD shops to buy, sell and trade CDs may be a little put off by it.

Personally I’ve traded or sold CDs at the regional chain Edward McKay’s in North Carolina and at the Sound Garden in Baltimore’s Fells Point. Both stores provide more than just money for CD’s you get the eclectic feeling of trading up for CDs that you really want, or want to try. The other advantage to the local store vs Amazon is the fact that most local record shops will give you straight up cash for your CDs rather than a gift card or store credit (if you want it).

More after the break

Amazon’s news is good for those who are looking to get rid of that box of CDs in their closet quickly and easily. The guy or girl who has totally upgraded to a digital library may see the advantage of getting an Amazon gift card for their CD collection.

With the Amazon trade in program you box up your CD’s and ship them to Amazon’s trade in center via UPS or USPS. After 6-10 days they give you a credit for your CDs in the form of an Amazon gift card. There is a trade in site that shows you the range of what you can get for the cd but of course they are all evaluated and the end payment is up to Amazon.

The Amazon CD trade in program is an all or nothing deal. Amazon won’t let you decide if you want to trade XX cd or not based on the pricing that they give you. Without a doubt though, the CD trade in program will help get clutter out of the world and help millions of people get Amazon gift cards for whatever it is they “really” want.
