This California Startup Says They Have The RightSignature INTERVIEW

As more and more smartphones and tablets make it into the hands of people worldwide, the need for easy to use document signing has grown. There are several startups in the document signing space like “Sign My Pad”, “Sign Later” and many others. Most of them import a pdf and allow you to draw on top, and sign.

RightSignature is a Santa Barbara California based startup that promises to be the all in one solution for getting documents filled out and signed online. RightSignature has a way to sign your documents on an iPad,iPhone, Android device or any web browser. They allow you to import any document locally or from the cloud.

For business users RightSignature allows the user to create templates for frequently used forms and other features to make the application easy to use and the documents legal. Long gone are the days of printing, signing and scanning, and of course waiting by a fax machine.

We got a chance to interview RightSignature co-founder and CEO Daryl Bernstein, check out the interview below:

What is your startup, what does it do?

RightSignature is the all-in-one solution for getting documents filled out and signed online.

You can upload a document, either stored locally or from your cloud storage provider of choice, and send it for e-signature in seconds. Your recipients then apply a legally-binding, hand-drawn electronic signature in any web browser or on an iPad, iPhone, or Android device, and the finished document is returned to you instantly and automatically.

We pride ourselves on our beautifully designed user experience and the power and flexibility of our product. RightSignature makes the actual document signing event completely intuitive with proprietary navigation tools to walk signers step-by-step through filling out and signing the document online. Business users take advantage of powerful features like Reusable Templates, which are documents set up for frequent use, and Online Forms, which enable you to embed the RightSignature online document signing experience inside your own website.

Who are the founders and what are their backgrounds?

Our founding team has an unusual and somewhat eclectic combination of experience in cloud computing, business software, and mass marketing. I’ve been an entrepreneur since childhood — I learned over time how to build bigger businesses by fulfilling more pressing pain points. Previously, I founded a company on my kitchen table that grew through creative direct marketing into the largest distributor and producer of educational videos for the K-12 market, and I later became an investor and advisor in business software companies.

Cary Dunn built some of the largest cloud applications in the world and is a mastermind of product design, infrastructure, and scaling. He also has been mastering his craft since a young age and, as an interesting sidenote, developed complex graphics algorithms for Dreamworks movies like Shrek. Jonathan Siegel is a cloud computing guru who has founded and advised a host of groundbreaking companies in SaaS and PaaS, including RightScale and Heroku.

Where are you based?

We’re based in beautiful Santa Barbara, California. It’s a little pocket of paradise about a third of the way between LA and the Bay area.

What is the startup culture like where you are based?

Santa Barbara has a burgeoning ecosystem of online software startups. Companies like Doubleclick, Commission Junction, and GoToMeeting started here, and those successes fueled a new wave of cloud and online software ventures in the area.

What problem does your startup solve?

Getting documents filled out and signed by clients, employees, and partners is traditionally a slow, error-prone, paper-intensive process. While PDF’s have been emailed around for years, as soon as people need to take action on those documents (fill out and/or sign), they were forced to go offline … in most cases, downloading and printing. RightSignature streamlines document signing requests in a fast, efficient, secure online workflow.

Our users span solo professionals, small businesses, and enterprises around the world, and they rely on RightSignature to get a diverse range of documents signed — contracts, proposals, NDA’s, employment forms, and many more.

Beyond efficiency, RightSignature helps businesses present a more professional face to their customers. Our legally-binding electronic signatures include authentication and compliance features that eliminate the risk of disputes over which version of a document was signed, and the secure archive ensures that companies always know where to find their most important signed agreements.

What is one challenge that you’ve overcome in the startup process?

Technically, the biggest challenge has been that our product works more like, say, YouTube, than like GoogleDocs. Meaning, instead of our cloud service pushing a single user experience or format on the user, we take documents uploaded by the user – which many be in any of many file formats and using a variety of settings – and turn it into an actionable, web-ready format that can be displayed reliably and consistently on all devices and in all browsers.

From a business point of view, the challenge is positioning and marketing our online document signing product so that it appeals to the diverse use cases of businesses of all sizes, in many different industries, all around the world.

What’s one thing the world doesn’t know about you or your startup?

We’re bootstrapped and proud of it. From day one, we’ve operated and grown entirely on the merits of our product, strong values, and good decisions. We have an awesome and exploding base of users – we call them our raging fans –whose support we earn and keep through product innovation and great service.

While we may bring in outside funding to add fuel to our growth trajectory, we’re committed to continuing to build the robust, sustainable company that our users trust and depend on for their most business-critical document needs.

What’s next for your startup?

The transition from paper to digital signatures is still in an early stage, and we have a challenging chapter ahead in scaling our company to meet the demand. Having online document signing capabilities is as vital for a modern business as having a website or a CRM program, and we’re always working to maintain RightSignature’s position as the best solution in the e-signature market.

RightSignature pushes the cutting edge in online documents, and we have a compelling (and top-secret) roadmap of innovative product development. Our new generation of iPhone and iPad apps are coming out soon. These apps will bring document sending, dashboard controls, and at-a-glance reporting to your mobile device, available wherever you go.
