One of the first questions people ask when they meet someone new is ‘what do you do for a living?’ What we do for work can say a lot about us as a person, and for those who have been in their career for a long time, it can define them. So when you lose your job, you don’t just have the practical dilemmas of less money to face, but you also lose part of your identity too. It can be a huge shock to the system and is probably one of the most stressful things you can go through in your adult life. Whether it was due to being fired, made redundant or the company being closed down, it’s important to remember that there is hope at the end of the tunnel if you’ve been put out of work. Here’s what you could do next.

Re-train or Study

If you’re financially able to take some time out from work, now would be a great time to get some more training or to study. It could be to give you a boost in your current field when you come to apply for work again, or it could be because you want to take a completely different path. Maybe you have been in a rut in your job for a while, in which case losing it could be a blessing in disguise. You might not have willingly chosen something else but put in the situation it opens up new opportunities. If you’ve outgrown your career, reached the end of the line or it’s not making you happy any more, why not look to do something else instead?

Go To An Employment Agency

If you need to get back into work quickly, a temp agency could be one way to go. In many cases, a temporary role can lead into a permanent one so it could lead you to your next job role. You inform the agency of your skills and experience and they will match you to suitable positions when they become available. You could continue to apply for other jobs in the meantime, but going through an agency to begin with gets you earning again far more quickly. That way you’re not waiting around for the companies you have applied for to get back to you about interviews.

Set Up a Business

If you’ve always been keen on the idea of being your own boss, what better time than to start your own business? Ideally, you will have enough savings to get you through the initial period until it starts earning money. But setting up a company and working on something you’re really passionate about could be far better than going back to a job that doesn’t completely fulfill you. You could start a small business from home and build up, or work with a partner or investor. You could even buy a franchise. Either way, losing your job could be what you needed to give you this push!
