Google screws up launch of Pages, however their is still time to fix their mistakes

For something that took so “long” to launch and still not get it right makes no sense. Yesterday the world was set a blaze after Google announces and then opens up their “Pages” section where companies, brands, and individuals could create a page for what ever they’d like. However, their is a major flaw. Random people still could not only create pages like you see above but Pages of other people/companies as well. But wait, companies, people, and websites can be verified. As seen below with how the, The Muppets are verified.

Except Google gives no way honest companies can have their pages verified. Quick search on Google provides zero information on anything close. So while yes you can block and/or report the profile, ten more could pop up by the time the real owners of it are even aware. This however would be nice if it was the only issue, but it isn’t.

When creating a new page you are able to put if its over 18,21 and such. Leading to believe photographers can then post more risky pictures that they’ve taken, however once more. Not the case as Toby Stein Community Manager of Google+ points out below.

Please read the page terms here: http://www.google.com/intl/en/+/policy/content.html

Nudity is not permitted on pages, even if they have age restrictions in place. Those age limits will permit you to limit who can see your page. However, certain content is not allowed regardless of age restrictions placed on that page.

Was a comment he left on a photographers post asking just this question, if he could post some more of his work since he put over 21. Makes sense, seeing how your Page can only see this page if you are over 21. You allow companies, photographers the ability to market to an older crowd yet prevent them from doing so.

There also was supposed to be this major difference in personal profiles versus Pages, yet to I guess my untrained eye there is no difference except for showing how many +1 they’ve received as well as being able to share just them as a “page” for now.

While Google sadly screwed up the launch by not letting companies/restaurants/people a way to verify their own pages before/during set-up to prevent fraud. Or even a reasonable change in profiles and a reason to mark your page over 18/21 for a reason there is still time for them to fix it and its not that hard.

  • Over 18/21 Pages can show nudity if for photography and not straight porn
  • Allow smaller companies to also be verified.
  • All companies are able to follow people and those people are able to leave comments/feedback on their pages. ie, I go to a restaurant and they circle me back I can leave feedback on the food, service.
  • Change the look of the Pages profile to make it so it differs from a normal profile or whats the point of having two different ones.
  • Before a Company/Brand signs up for a Page, make them go through a verification process, and if unable to under the name says fan created so people right away can tell fake/real
  • Allow multiple users to control a Business Page(We are told this is in the works, why not right away makes no sense.)
Google had time to make a major play in this field however they failed in every way at launch. However its not to late for them to fix it and show why they told people/companies to wait on building a page…
