UK Startup: FlavrBox Puts Flavor In The Subscription Box

We’ve brought you stories about a variety of box subscriptions like Chicago’s Klutch Club; popular New York beauty box, Birch Box; and even Houston based crafts subscription box startup, Whimseybox.

Across the pond the subscription box is catching on too and in even more new and exciting ways. Flavrbox actually ships the best in nonperishable food items and ingredients to their subscribers. We love food that’s one of the reasons this startup caught our eye, but also the innovative approach to tackling the problem of how do you ship food to subscribers.

I mean how much soup and crackers can one person eat? Well we found out that FlavrBox is way more than just soup and crackers. They have an innovative approach to the subscription box in their flavor packed food boxes that they send through the post (British for mail).

Are they sending tea and crumpets through the post? Find out below in our interview with Flavrbox, a tasty new British startup



What is Flavrbox?
Our vision is simple: challenge the way we connect food production and consumption by cutting  all middlemen. To date, we launched a marketplace, the closest replication of a farmers market as well as an exciting tasting box subscription model. The idea is to enable people all around the country to discover the best products from the top producers in the country, sent direct to your home or office.
Who are the founders and what are their backgrounds
Seb, Ruben, Simon and Noam are the founders of Flavrbox. Seb and Ruben met at University and are young social entrepreneurs. Simon is the founder of a Bristol based web development agency whilst Noam is a trainer and coach.
How did you come up with the idea?
British food is amazing, so long as you go away from the supermarket. We thought there must be a way to help all those small producers get out there on the internet and known by consumers. We got inspired by the whole local food movement and the passion that producers have to make great products; we wanted to share and make accessible those amazing products to the rest of the country. It’s also to do with ensuring the future for our children is bright: a future full of people who have the skills to produce great food and the chance to make a living from their production – rather than being at the expense of some big conglomerate.
So you said earlier that part of flavrbox is a box of food sent via post, how do you do that? Is it all non perishable?
For the time being, yes! What we’ve done is curated the best products out there and every month to give you a selection of those for you to try and discover. We send you the box, with a story of the product and producers so we bring to life to what we eat.
Can you describe the contents of your last box?
Oh no! The whole point is for this to be mysterious and to discover without knowing first what you’ll get. All I can tell you is: all products are delicious, rare and have something unique. It’ll be a mixture of chocolate, coffee, relish and chutneys, drinks, sauces, oils and any other non-perishable you can dream of. Maybe even snacks and special salts or pepper. Who knows?
What is your monetization strategy?
The box in itself is where we’re aiming to make the most of the money since this works in a simple retail model. The marketplace also works on a 15% commission basis but that’s more to cover our costs.
How many users do you guys have and what’s your plan to build scale?
We’ve got hundreds at the moment and there’s big plans to scale up. We’re now part of an incubation programme so looking for growing rapidly though fun marketing campaigns and the like.
Are you boot strapping it or funded?
Boot strapping, the good ol’ way for university graduates but soon getting some funding.
Can you tell us one lesson or two you learned launching flavrbox.
I guess there are millions of them, but surely that everything takes longer than you expect… even when you’ve expected longer to already be longer, if you see what I mean? I would also say that driving traffic and momentum requires a lot of energy, hence why you should be passionate about your products!
