Washington DC Startup: Contactually Manages Your Relationships Contextually In Your Inbox INTERVIEW

Washington DC startup Contactually launched their contact relationship management tool for email back in January. Contactually is backed by Dave McClure’s 500 startups and has also raised over $200,000 in angel funds.

Contactually’s tool works right in your inbox and connects you and your contacts through email and LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Klout, Quora, Flickr, and more social networks. The service syncs all your contacts relevant data into your new online address book that works seamlessly with GMail and Google Apps.

Contactually provides an easy to navigate contact dashboard which highlights your weekly activity along with your action items. It also sends reminders to you via email based on your action items with your contacts. It’s an extremely useful tool for business professionals, prosumers and even startups who often have a hard time keeping tabs on all the balls they are juggling.

We met some of the nice folks at Contactually when we were in DC for Capital Connection, TechBuzz and the TechCocktail Startup America events last month. Check out our interview below:

What is Contactually?
Contactually is a service that helps you keep in touch with the people you care about the most.
Who are the founders and what are their backgrounds?
We have three founders: CEO Zvi Band, head of business development and marketing Tony Cappaert, and lead developer Jeff Carbonella. Zvi and Jeff ran a development shop in DC for several years, building websites and apps for clients. Tony previous worked at Microsoft on the Bing team.
What is the problem Contactually solves?
A big problem that people have is forgetting to follow up with people. In today’s world, we have so many contacts and connect with so many people we are bound to forget to keep in touch with a few. This is where Contactually comes in.  We also automatically aggregate contactinfo from email signatures and other social media accounts, and can sync all of that information with other software (like CRMs and campaign management software).
There are a lot of “contact management” startups, what is your secret sauce/competitive edge?
Our hook is simple: Contactually reminds its users to follow up with their most important contacts. We analyze all previous conversation history — emails, LinkedIn messages, etc — to understand how importnat a contact is to you.  No one else does that. It’s less “contact” management and more “relationship” management.
What’s one challenge you’ve overcome in the startup process?
The biggest challenge was really figuring out what our users wanted and how to strip down our product to something that would require the least amount of effort from users.  Knowing when to say yes to one feature and no to another can be tough.
Are you bootstrapped or funded?
We’re funded by 500 Startups and angel investors on both coasts. We just raised $500,000 in our last round
What’s next for Contactually?
Well, we’re focusing on rolling out a ton of new features now. We just flipped the switch on Facebook integration, and we’re working on adding a few more services with which we can integrate (like Producteev, Pipedrive, etc).  And a mobile app is coming this fall!
Where can people find out more?
We’re on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube if you search for “Contactually,” but the best way is to head to Contactually.com and there you can learn more about the product.  Email us anytime at support@contactually.com.
