Microsoft might have to sweat this one out for a while as Sahas Katta walked into a Microsoft store today, took the Windows Phone 7 Challenge, WON, but was denied his prize. For those that don’t know the back story on the Challenge here we go…
This is a skill-based Contest. The object of this Contest is for You to come into the Microsoft Store and try to beat the Microsoft Windows Phone in a series of five (5) “Smoked by Windows Phone” challenge scenarios selected by Microsoft at its sole discretion including: (1) Pocket-to-Picture-to-Post, (2) Real-Time Information with Live Tiles, (3) Using the People Hub to Stay in Touch with the People You Care About Most, (4) Updating Your Status Across Multiple Social Networks, and (5) Local Scout (“Challenge”)
Sounds simple enough right, play beat the clock against another human to see which is faster, your phone or a Windows Phone 7. But that is where the clarity stops and the confusion begins. Katta who happens to write for Skattertech took the challenge and won, or did he?
After a three-second count down, I hit the power button on my phone and said “DONE!” out loud. I had disabled the lock screen entirely, which is a rather awesome out-of-the-box feature of Android that takes you straight to the home screen with a single push of the power button. I didn’t even need to touch the screen, since the two weather widgets were already there.
So why didn’t he win? He did what they told him to do, but here is one employees reasoning as to denying him his rightful prize.
That I need to display the weather of different cities in different states and that “my phone could not do that”
So instead of winning his rightful prize, the manager had the balls to even ask him to snap a photo in front of a sign that read along the lines of “My Android was smoked by Windows Phone” before leaving the store. Really classy Microsoft…
