Apple Now Censors Jailbreak From iTunes Store

Apple, taking a page out of Twitters arsenal and censoring things it doesn’t like has added another one. The word JailBreak will no longer be found in the iTunes store. For those that don’t know, Jailbreaking: iOS jailbreaking, or simply jailbreaking, is the process of removing the limitations imposed by Apple on devices running the iOS operating system through the use of custom kernels.

So with Apple, not liking the fact that people pay hundreds of dollars, or even body parts, to own not rent/barrow the device. They are trying to get rid of any and all evidence about such products. So besides Applications being disallowed for political reasons into the iTunes store, any mention of Jailbreaking will now be as well.

AT&T Store Employees Recommending iPhone And Android To Those Interested In Lumia 900

Two weeks ago Brent reported on the fact that Nokia was going to line the pockets of AT&T employees for recommending their new Lumia 900 smartphone. Well it appears that some employees either didn’t get that memo or get that check.

CNet reporter Marguerite Reardon set out on a mission Monday to see what AT&T employees at stores in New York City had to say about the new Nokia Lumia 900, a Windows Phone 7 device. She went into several area stores posing as a first time smartphone buyer and expressed interest in the latest Windows Phone 7 device.

Despite a star studded launch event in New York City over the weekend, and the fact that there is signage everywhere in AT&T stores promoting the Lumia, Reardon found that New York City AT&T Wireless employees were still quick to recommend the iPhone.

Australian Startup Announces The “Playa”iPhone Case The Ultimate Hook Up Companion

Australian based startup Annex products launched in 2011 with a product designed by mates Rob Ward and Chris Peters. Their first product, the Opena case, is an iPhone case with a bottle opener built into it very similar to beaheadcase.com’s cases for opening beer bottles. They launched the Opena case on Kickstarter the popular crowd-funding site for new products.

The new case called the “Playa” provides protection, not only for your beloved iPhone but from STD’s, and unwanted pregnancies as well. How does it do this? It’s the first case designed to hold your phone and a condom.

The condom is secured in a sliding compartment that is flush with the case and no one can tell what’s in there. It holds two condoms easily. As the company says “no condoms falling on the red carpet for the playa case owner”.

Colorado Start Up Answers: Dude Where’s My Everything

Steamboat Springs Colorado startup Ugrokit was founded by the wife and husband team of Carrie and Terry Requist to answer one of life’s most important questions: Dude Where’s My Everything.

Key finders have been around since the 80’s. There were some that worked like the clapper while others responded to a whistle or even others that required you keep track of a button in case you lose your keys. The idea has been refined over and over again. The ZOMM is a great iteration of a keyfinding device but that one uses BlueTooth technology and is relegated to a circular disc like device that is fastened on your keyring.

Ugrokit is different. Ugrokit uses RFID tags that are cheap, flat, washable and can attach to just about everything. The system comes with a Grok which is an orange RFID scanner that attaches to an iPhone (Android later?). You then use as many tags as you would like and you scan them into your iPhone. Once an item is scanned it’s stored and if you can’t locate that item  you just wave the scanner around where you think it might be and a series of beeps tells you whether your hot or cold.

New Start Up Will Let Developers Sell Their App (as in the business) E-Bay Style

When I first heard about Apptopia and the words “app” “sell” and “purchase” were in the same conversation I instantly thought we had another third party app store on our hands. No, that’s far from what Apptopia is.

This Boston based start up is headed by Jonathan Kay and Eli Sapir. Kay was the Ambassador of Buzz for Grasshopper, the phone service for startups. Sapir was the former Entrepreneur in Residence at GreatPoint Ventures. Sapir also founded GPush a Gmail notification iPhone app. It was GPush, and his difficulty selling the business which prompted Apptopia.

Apptopia is a marketplace, not for downloads, but for app developers to sell their businesses, not just licensing either, the whole shooting match. Betabeat characterized Apptopia as an exit strategy for unprepared developers.

OMGPOP: Last Leap Of Faith Brought A Home Run

Although the financial details were off limits during Zynga’s conference call announcing the purchase of OMGPOP, the details were later revealed in a SEC filing which is a requirement for public companies like Zynga.  As allthingsd and TechCrunch reported Zynga bought 100% of the outstanding stock of OMGPOP for $180 million dollars.

It’s been well documented, and it seems as if CEO Dan Porter has no bones about admitting it, before Draw Something, the future at OMGPOP was uncertain.  They had received $16 million in funding over the previous four years, however as Betabeat reports their last round of funding before Draw Something was more of a hail mary round.

Zynga Officially Announces Purchase Of OMGPOP, Won’t Disclose Financials

Zynga held a conference call earlier today where they formally announced their purchase of OMGPOP the creators of the hit game “Draw Something”. Zynga’s head of mobile David Ko conducted the call from OMGPOP’s New York headquarters.

During the call Zynga announced that they are at 240 million monthly active users (MAU), and still have their sites on one billion monthly active users. Ko said that their mission at Zynga was to continue connecting people through games.

If for some reason you’ve been living under a rock and you’re not sure what OMGPOP or “Draw Something” is, it’s a Pictionary style game that you can play on your phone against your Facebook friends or completely random strangers. You take turns drawing one of three possible pictures, based on difficulty. Easy pictures like a leg or an arm will earn you one coin for drawing and guessing correctly. Tougher pictures like running or bacon will yield you two points. The most difficult category is often proper nouns like Lil Wayne or Lady GaGa for those you get three points.

You know something is wrong when you have to smuggle iPhones back into the country they’re made

I really wish I could have made this story up but even I couldn’t. A man has been caught smuggling iPhones BACK into China where they are made. Seeing how sales of the iPhone are strictly sold in the underground economy as Apple has refused to deal with the demands the service providers are trying to force. Importing them back into the country has been the only way those in China could buy one.

Recently though, Apple has confirmed that it is trying to work out selling the iPhone even after the egg filled launch in which plagued the first attempt.

Apple iMessage Fails To Protect Privacy

Apple iMessage fails to protect privacy. An Apple employee had his iMessage account accidentally hacked by a flaw in the way Apple currently has their iMessage account hardwired to the users SIM card. The apple employees personal details, communications and pictures have been released to the public via Gizmodo and Business Insider. Imagine if you were him. All your little details of your life being available to an anonymous person that could use that information to blackmail you into doing things you really don’t want to do or ruin relationships you have by exposing private personal or work conversations that are not meant to be public knowledge. The list goes on and on. I’m sure you can think of a few things wrong with this scenario too.

Here’s the short story of what happened. A mothers sons iPhone needed service, she takes it to an Apple store in her area for service, she picks it up with it appearing to be working as it should, they later find out it is somehow receiving a mysterious mans iMessage communication. Apparently it was transmitting an Apple employees information. More of the story can be found from the source links.

Currently Apples iMessage account is tied to the users SIM card. This is bad. Other messaging services have a sign in type account instead that makes this particular problem not happen. I’m sure Apple is going to fix this issue quickly. Anyone glad you’re using an Android device right about now?

Capsule Is Your One Stop Event Shop App For Android And iPhone

The group event space is becoming a crowded one, you’ve got e-invite for inviting, or eventbrite for ticketing, you have several group texting apps and others for group email. You’ve got Facebook events and some people even use Myspace for events still (I know Myspace….).

When Capsule’s co-founders Cyrus Farudi and Omri Cohen got together they didn’t want another group event app to add to all the others, they were looking for something to replace all the others. Capsule is that app.

According to Capsule’s founders in an interview with the Los Angeles Times they set out to cover the entire life cycle of a group event from start to finish. “No one has that complete solution over the marketplace, and I think that’s one thing that sets us apart,” said Farudi in the interview to the LA Times,  formerly of Flipswap. Capsule “solves the event life-cycle management problem.”

The less than a year old start up came after the two founders collectively attended 14 weddings and nine bachelor parties in one year. They are based in the Manhattan Beach area of Los Angeles which is being dubbed “Silicon Beach”.

CES 2012: Check Out Text Rings, This Is Interesting

Here at CES you’ll find things that are just, interesting. Text Rings is one of those. This North Carolina based start up was self funded however they now have some private investors.

Their product is part jewlery, part stylus and it’s called Text Rings. These small rings fit on the users thumbs and provide a capacitive touch stylus on the users thumb tips. The Text Rings allow you to text easier than using your actual finger tips, keeping your touch screen clean.

The founder insists that the text rings improve accuracy however Brent found that this just wasn’t the case. Brent who is a frequent texter, and uses his thumbs for texting, found that the text ring tips weren’t as accurate as he would have expected. In the video you will also notice that the text rings didn’t do much for the speed.

It is an innovative idea though, you don’t have to  pull out stylus to use your touchscreen if it’s already on your thumb tips. Currently the text rings are available here in a set of two and in black. The shocker though is that they are $29.99. While we can see the use for the text rings we don’t think we would rush out to get them.  Perhaps if the set of two was more in the price range of $10. After all you can get styli from the likes of Bracketron and Targus for under $15.00
